IBTP Certifications are acquired through the completion of Knowledge Area Demonstrations (KADs), clinical experience and clinical supervision. The following Certifications are available: Certified Pastoral Counselor (CPC) KNOWLEDGE AREA DEMONSTRATIONS Doctorate level study requires considerable mastery of broad conceptual and historical knowledge, in depth understanding of theoretical and practical issues, and the ability to apply knowledge to problems of professional significance. As a Cornerstone student you will acquire and demonstrate these competencies through the completion of Knowledge Area Demonstrations (KADs). These KADs become an effective avenue for acquiring and demonstrating doctorate level competence. Each student is expected to encounter general areas of knowledge in their preparation of each KAD. The KAD is subdivided into three components--a Breadth, a Depth, and an Application section. The Breadth section requires a demonstration of the student's familiarity with the broad theoretical and conceptual underpinnings of the knowledge base. The assignments will allow for individually designed approaches but will be based upon essentially the same cross-disciplinary literature. The Depth section will entail a demonstration of the student's understanding of a specialized area. Each student will develop an annotated bibliography and write a scholarly paper which will reflect a "state-of-the-art" understanding of a specialized area, issue or concern. The Application section will be a specialized assignment that reveals the student's understanding of the theoretical and conceptual underpinnings of the knowledge base by relating it to a relevant issue in their profession. The components of each KAD share a common internal structure. Learning objectives for the component are set forth and a list of Basic Readings is provided. The student will select a specified number of these titles, the contents of which will be integrated in a comprehensive assignment. This assignment will be selected from a series of options or can be individually developed in consultation with the student's faculty advisor. The faculty will assess each KAD and determine whether it meets the criteria set forth for that particular KAD. The assessment is based on how clearly you demonstrate and express your competency. Papers must also show evidence of conceptualization that involves comparison and contrast of the ideas you find in the literature. If it meets the standards of excellence and fulfills the expected knowledge criteria, the KAD will receive a passing evaluation and the student will gain credit for that particular KAD--eight (8) credits (with the exception of two 10 credit KADs). A total of seven (7) KADs must be completed. If the KAD does not meet the standards of excellence and/or does not fulfill the expected knowledge criteria, the KAD will be returned to the student for rework. Upon completion of rework, the student is to resubmit the KAD for another evaluation and will work the KAD until it becomes acceptable to Cornerstones standards. In addition, each student must do a dissertation. Students will submit a dissertation proposal to their faculty advisor and doctoral committee. Upon approval, the student may proceed with the dissertation. (See the dissertation handbook for greater detail.) NOTE: Before students begin writing their KADs their first assignment is to write an essay designed to explore carefully their past learning experiences and incorporate new learning on basic questions which are being addressed in Psychoanalytic reflection and praxis. Students will also reflect on their future professional and vocational goals.

History of Psychoanalysis PSYA 600 Individual Psychology: Past, Present and Future A historical review of concepts leading to present day dynamic psychology and Adler’s place in this development. PSYA 601 History of Theocentric Psychology The historical development of Theocentric Psychology, developed by Dr. Daniel Briggs is examined. PSYA 602 History Psychoanalytic Theory This course surveys the historical developments of psychoanalysis from the time of Freud.
Scientific Background of Psychoanalysis PSYA 603 Early Recollections This course covers the techniques of analyzing early recollections to determine ones’ ‘life style.’ This includes the private logic and mistaken goals of one’s personality. PSYA 604 Dream Analysis Discussion of analytic proceedings, showing how dreams affect the course of analysis and of life, both with and without insight into the dream’s meaning leading to further dreams, etc.
Theories in Psychoanalysis PSYA 700 Introduction to Adlerian Psychology A presentation of the theoretical principles of Individual Psychology as a basis for under-standing the learning perceptual influences upon the development of the personality and the creation of an individual’s lifestyle in reference to the family constellation. PSYA 701 Major Personality Theories in Psychoanalysis Examination and analysis of the major theories, principles, and techniques of psychoanalytic theories. PSYA 702 Advanced Studies in Alderian Psychology These classes consider the development of knowledge and practical application of Adlerian approaches to psychotherapy. Social emphasis is placed upon the respective roles of the analyst, the patient, and the nature of the analytic relationship.
Technique and Theory of Technique PSYA 703 Life Style Analysis An introductory course which focuses on early recollections and the family constellation. The early social milieu in which the individual develops fundamental attitudes is discussed, with an emphasis on understanding the importance of other family members in relation to the individual’s subjective view of him/herself. PSYA 704 Psychoanalytic Interviewing Techniques An initial course designed to provide students with basic principles and techniques of interviewing. The course format includes discussions, demonstrations, and experience in conducting interviews.
Seminars in Special Areas PSYA 705 Marriage Psychotherapy Application of analytic theory and techniques to the understanding and resolution of premarital and marital issues and problems. Through lecture and case presentation students are introduced to a variety of analytic procedure. PSYA 706 Family Psychotherapy This Lecture demonstration course focuses on the understanding of family dynamics; family systems, issues of responsibility, sibling rivalry, etc. PSYA 707 Psychopharmacology This course presents the basic scientific principles and clinical information needed for a basic understanding of the uses and limitations of the major classes of psychopharmacological agents. Students will be introduced to major psycholrogic drugs, their clinical application, and side effects in the management of psychological and behavioral disorders.
Clinical Applications PSYA 800 Clinical Pre-Internship This seminar course is require prior to the students work with patients. This process also requires that students participate in personal didactic analysis with an approved analyst (for a minimums of 300 hrs). PSYA 801 Clinical Internship I PSYA 802 Clinical Internship II PSYA 803 Clinical Internship II PSYA 804 Clinical Internship IV A minimum of three (3) cases are required to be seen each week at an approved Community Service Clinic under supervision of an institute approved analyst. A total of 2000 hours of supervised work is required. PSYA 805 Psychodynamics of Psychopathology This seminar course focuses on the basic concepts of normal and abnormal behavior, the significance of the crisis situation, the creation, maintenance and purpose of symptoms, and the dynamics of neuroses, psychoses, personality and psychosomatic disorders.
Psychoanalytic Supervision I, II, III, IV PSYA 806 Psychoanalytic Case Supervision I PSYA 807 Psychoanalytic Case Supervision II PSYA 808 Psychoanalytic Case Supervision III PSYA 809 Psychoanalytic Case Supervision IV Case supervision is required to be taken simultaneously with Clinical Internship and is an integral part of learning about case presentations, ethics, law, etc. A total of 150 hours of face to face supervision is required.
Psychoanalytic Group Practice PSYA 900 Forming the Group Emphasis on the early steps in forming the group is the focus of this course. This will be an experiential course. PSYA 901 Maintaining the Group Emphasis on the early steps in managing the dynamic development of group. Experiential learning will be utilized in this course.
Psychodynamics of Individual and Group Process. PSYA 902 Working with Resistance An overview is presented of the obstacles to maturation of individual or group analysis. Again experiential learning will be utilized in this course. PSYA 903 Working with Transferences This course presents a didactic and experiential examination of the development, cultivation and constructive use of prospective relationships between patients and analyst or among group members and that of the analyst.
Life Span PSYA 904 Conception through the Third Year A study of developmental Issues of this segment of human development. PSYA 905 The Third Year to Adolescence A study of the many developmental issues of this segment of human development. PSYA 906 Adolescence to Adulthood A study of the psychic structure and of this stage of life with a review of earlier unresolved issues and their effect on the adult patient.
Research PSYA RES Research Seminar This course serves to integrate the students academic program of study and clinical interests with an introduction to research design and methodology, with a review and discussion of recent research studies. Work will be done according to the American Psychological Association’s Standards for preparation of manuscripts. Note: All courses are 15 classroom hour equivalency with the exception of the research course which is 60 classroom hour Equivalency.
Translating Knowledge Area Curriculum to Psychoanalytic Tutorial KADs Psychoanalytic tutorials, under the guidance of a psychoanalytic faculty assessor, replace the Depth and Application components of the core KADs and all components of the advanced KADs. Each tutorial carries either 2 or 3 semester credits-typically totaling 8 semester credits for the KAD. All IBTP and UWCMA students are expected to demonstrate breadth competence in the core and advanced KADs based on the guidelines presented in the KAD Curriculum Guide. That is, all students should focus their studies on the recommended readings in the breadth sections of each core and advanced KAD. Within each depth and application psychoanalytic tutorial, students are expected to survey the breadth of topics associated with the subject of that psychoanalytic tutorial, students are expected to survey the breadth of topics associated with the subject of that psychoanalytic tutorial. Following the breadth survey for a given tutorial, the student should proceed to an in-depth study of selected subtopics of particular interest for that tutorial. One’s studies culminate in the development of a scholarly paper that permits one to demonstrate the breadth and depth mastery of the subject matter of the tutorial. It should be noted that the breadth section of KADs 1 and 3 are unrelated to psychoanalytical subject matter and therefore, they will require demonstrations based on the UWCMA KAD recommended readings in addition to the Certification readings. However, the breadth sections of KADs 2 and 4 correspond, in content, to the psychoanalytic tutorials recommended for these core KADs. By making a standard breadth demonstration for KADs 2 and 4, the student will complete the recommended psychoanalytic tutorial. The breadth sections for the advanced KADs (5 and 6) also correspond to the recommended psychoanalytic tutorials. The current edition of the advanced KADs offer additional references useful to the psychoanalytic student.
Students interested in receiving NAAP Certification must contact the Director of PsyA Certification for details. The CTPsyA Certification Program follows NAAP’s guidelines, however NAAP certification is not automatic.
